Five Reasons to Use Plain Soap and Water

There are plenty of reasons to avoid chemical laden, antibacterial hand sanitizers and soaps. Some relate to your own health and other relate to our environments’ health. While the perceived convenience of just quickly “cleansing” your hands every time you jump in the car sounds appropriate; the following five reasons may have you going “ew!”

Triclosan! Triclosan is a chemical compound placed in a large variety of hand sanitizers and antibacterial soaps. First and foremost, it has always been Earth Girl’s point of view to avoid as many chemicals in our environment as possible. They just aren’t worth it. But science has recently proven that triclosan can disrupt thyroid function (especially in young developing children), contribute to antibiotic resistant bacteria, and can potentially contribute to the development of skin cancer. Additional research has shown that triclosan has not been proven to be more effective in eliminating “germs” than a plain old bar of soap, good scrubbing and a rinse with water.
Dry Skin! The prevalent use of hand sanitizers and the large volume of alcohol they contain can strip your skin of precious oils. During cold and flu season when the use of hand sanitizers dramatically rises is the exact same time that dry environments in our homes and offices are the rule. Dry skin can crack and increase the likelihood that bacteria can enter a site and cause infection.
Save Money! Sure, you can purchase a pocket sized hand sanitizer for about $1, but then you typically use it up in a matter of days. Compare that to a bar of soap that you use upon your return home that can lasts for weeks…you have money back in your pocket.
Save Your Septic! It makes sense that antibacterial products going down your drain into your septic and local sewer system can actually kill the beneficial bacteria that keeps our septic and sewer systems functioning properly. As a previous one of my blogs mentions, not all bacteria is bad! Antibacterial soaps and sanitizers don’t know the difference between good and bad, they universally kill them all.
Plastic! Food for thought, or should I say, antibacterial for thought? You place harsh chemicals in a chemical laden environment (the plastic these products are sold in) and then place that little bottle in your purse or car. Then think of those hot days when everything seems to melt together…yuck! It is a compounding of chemicals into chemicals. Then consider all of the plastic bottles that get thrown away to fill our landfills with both plastic and chemicals…environmental bummer!

In most instances, it is worth the wait to get home and wash your hands the old fashion way, in your sink with a bar of soap and running water. Go the restaurant bathroom to wash your hands prior to eating (and think of the extra steps you gain in your activity level!) if you are out to lunch after shopping. And when you absolutely need to use a product on the go…check out Earth Girl Wellness’s Natural Hand Cleansing Spray! It is free of chemicals, contains moisturizers and smells like amazing essential oils!
