Five Chemical Sources You Need to Eliminate in Your Home

Five Chemical Sources You Need to Eliminate in Your Home

Artificial fragrances in your laundry detergent and fabric softeners. There is a seemingly endless array of fragrances in the laundry aisle these days. Botanical Mist, Honey Flower, and Spring and Renewal all try to create beautiful feelings and emotions. Unfortunately, behind those feelings and emotions are harsh chemicals that can actually irritate your skin and eyes. Many of the chemicals are suspected carcinogens. If you already suffer from eczema, dry skin and eyes or unusual rashes, pause for a moment and think about what detergent you are using. Look for organic products with no artificial fragrances and use vinegar as your natural fabric softener (no, your clothing and linens will not smell of vinegar!). Earth Girl Wellness has a safe alternative to the chemical laden laundry products on the market with her own All Natural Laundry Detergent. It is simply scented with lavender essential oils.

Colors, preservatives, fragrances and grease cutting compounds in dishwashing detergents. No ingredients scare me quite as much as what can be placed in a dishwashing detergent! So many of the ingredients placed in these liquids and powders are unspecified as to what they are…”fragrance?” Hmmm…. When you think about how these chemicals can cause skin and eye irritation, reproductive issues and are possibly linked to cancer and kidney problems, why are we using them to clean things we use to eat? The chronic use of these products can create build up on utensils, plates, and cups and then go directly into our bodies. Not to mention all of the chemicals going down the drain into our environment.

Shampoos and conditioners. Regularly shampooing with ingredients such as sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), sodium laurel sulfate (SLS), parabens and fragrances (again!) can leave harmful residue in most of your precious organs. These chemicals actually penetrate your skin and can circulate in your body for up to five days! They can lead to immune dysfunction causing allergies, asthma, sinusitis, colds and even cancer. Try ingredients found in your home such as eggs, honey and lemon juice instead.

Hand and body lotions. Here we go again…SLEC, SLS, parabens, triclosans, phthalates, synthetic colors and fragrances can all be found in your lotion! Yuck! Skin reactions, cellular damage (and not to your cell phone!), cancer, kidney and respiratory damage, and harm to fetal development are all possible side effects in the quest for softer, younger looking skin. Need I say more? Of course, Earth Girl has several unique and fun smelling lotions that avoid all of the chemicals and soften hands better than most everything else on the market.

Scented candles. Candles? Really? Harmful? Yes! They actually contribute to indoor air pollution! This pollution (even on an only occasional basis) can lead to allergies, asthma, lung damage and even cancer. Once again, the fragrances found in many popular candle distributors contain alkans, alkenes, toluene, phthalates and formaldehyde–all hazardous chemicals that leave a toxic soot blanket all over our house. Look for candles and wax melts that contain only organic ingredients and natural fragrances.
