The Salem Civic Center is at the heart of a tradition in the Salem-Roanoke metropolitan area. Tens of thousands gather at the facility to see their favorite performers, such as Carrie Underwood, cheer on their favorite sports team, thrill to the excitement of the rodeo in the January, the Salem Fair in June, or Sesame Street performances in December. The Kid's Winter Carnival is always a hit with both the kids and parents and makes a welcome break from a long winter indoors.

The Roanoke Valley Horse Show attracts visitors from the entire east coast. The Salem Fair provides 11 days of fun, complete with exhibits, crafts, food, carnival rides, games, and more. For sports fans, the James E. Taliaferro Sports and Entertainment Complex (Salem Civic Center, Salem Football Stadium, Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium) offers a magnificent venue for the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, NCAA Basketball, Avalanche Baseball, and Salem High School Football.
